Decision making lies at the heart of our professional lives. Every day
in small and large companies hundreds if not thousands of decisions
are made. The outcomes of all those decisions determine business
performance.
In today’s economic conditions, decision making takes on a much
more critical dimension as bad decisions can be disasterous. One of the most
important decisions you can make is to learn more about how you
make decisions in order to maximise your ability to make good
decisions and avoid making bad ones.
Decision making is a cognitive process (i.e. it is a brain function).
Recently published and peer reviewed research clearly demonstrates
that we use three different mental strategies when making a decision:
- intuitive
- rational
- expert
Each strategy works extremely well when used in the right context.
However the evidence shows that we tend to over rely on the intuitive
strategy regardless of the context. This does not always serve us
well. Science can help us make better decisions by providing the
tools to:
- identify the best strategy to use in the
specific decision context
- execute each strategy to fully optimise its potential
